SIGOURNEY, Lydia Howard Huntley (1791-1865)
Writer, educator, philanthropist, Lydia Howard Huntley married Charles Sigourney. BY her death she was the best-known woman writer and poet in the United States and had written or compiled fifty-six books. She lived throughout her life in Hartford, CT. DPM much admired her work.

SMITH, Margaret Bayard (1778-1844)
A writer of novels and essays, Margaret Bayard Smith was also the wife of the editor of the National Intelligencer, the Republican Washington newspaper. A friend and contemporary of DPM's in Washington, wrote her first biographical sketch.

SMITH, Richard
Cashier of the Bank of the Metropolis and brother of Clement Smith, Richard Smith was President of the Farmers and Mechanics Bank in Georgetown. He was a friend of DPM and her trustee after.

SMITH, Samuel General (1752-1839)
Soldier and politician, Smith was a wealthy merchant from Baltimore who, with his brother Robert, was a powerful force within the Republican Party. Clashed with JM over trade and military policies.

SMITH, Samuel Stanhope (1751-1819)
President of the College of New Jersey, later renamed Princeton, and a long-standing friend of JM, he corresponded with both Mr. and Mrs. Madison in 1809 soliciting help for his son, John Witherspoon Smith, who had been removed from his job as a judge in the New Orleans Territory.

SOUISSAT, Jean Pierre
Originally French, immigrated to US in 1804. Became Madisons' "major domo" in White House, until it burned down in 1814, after which he went to work at the Bank of Metropolis. Devoted to DPM, Souissat, he helped her in Washington after she returned there in 1837.

STEVENSON, Sarah Coles (1789-1865)
A member of the Coles family and second cousin to DPM, SCS married Andrew Stevenson, planter, politician and diplomat. She was thus wife of the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives (1827-1834) and of the U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James (1836-1841). DPM and SCS remained close throughout their lives.

STEWART, Sarah
A slave of the Madisons living at Montpelier.

STEWART, Benjamin

SYME, Martha H. (-1824)
She was a cousin of DPM through the Winston family.
