The Selected Letters of Dolley Payne Madison
The Selected Letters of Dolley Payne
Madison

A single-volume edition of selected letters from the correspondence of Dolley Payne Madison (1768-1849), this book introduces the reader to the most important First Lady of the 19th century. For the eight years her husband was president, Dolley Madison was the leader of Republican society in Washington, D.C. She affirmed the political legitimacy of her husband and she guided the creation of a republican political culture. Yet little is known about her. This volume will be a major step in understanding Dolley Madison and a contribution to our knowledge of the role of the First Lady.

The Selected Letters of Dolley Payne Madison was published by the University of Virginia Press in 2003.
