VIAR, Jose Ignacio de
A Spanish diplomat, he was a special envoy to the United States from Spain in 1788 and then in 1790s was commissioner and consul general from Spain under Yrujo, after which he stayed on in Philadelphia. He was a friend of DPM and Anna Payne's through Sally McKean Yrujo.

WAGGAMAN, George Augustus (1782-1843)
Lawyer, planter and politician, Waggaman was born in MD but moved to Louisiana in 1810 where he became a lawyer and sugar planter and went into politics and served in the U.S. Senate, 1831-1835.. He was related to President John Tyler by marriage.

WARDEN, David Bailie (1772-1845)
Diplomat and scholar, DBW was born in Ireland but emigrated to US in 1799. JM appointed him Consul to France on 1 March 1811 to work under Joel Barlow, and after Barlow died DBW tried to assume post of Minister. Removed in 1814.

WATTERSTON, George (1783-1854
Author, lawyer, journalist JM appointed him Librarian of Congress in 1815; Jackson dismissed him in 1829. Watterston founded the Washington National Monument Society in 1833.

WINSTON, Lucy (Mrs. Isaac) (?-1825)
Second wife of Isaac Winston and second daughter of William Coles and Lucy Winston Dabney, she was born on the Coles Hill plantation.

WILKINS, William
Philadelphia lawyer who was DPM's counsel and friend.

YRUJO, Sally McKean (1777-1841)
Daughter of Pennsylvania Governor Thomas McKean and wife of Spanish envoy and Minister to the United States, Don Carlos Maria Martinez d'Yrujo. SMY and DPM had become friends as young women in Philadelphia and remained in touch even after Yrujo moved to Spain.
