An architect and engineer, Benjamin Henry Latrobe helped DPM furnish the White House, and designed special furniture and her carriage, when the Madisons moved into the executive mansion in March, 1809.

LABTROBE, Mary Elizabeth Hazlehurst (1771-1841)
Daughter of Philadelphia merchant Isaac Hazelhurst and second wife of Benjamin Latrobe, MEHL was an old Philadelphia friend of DPM, and the two women remained close. MEHL worked with her husband and DPM in furnishing the White House.

LAW, Eliza Parke Custis (1776-1832)
Eldest grandchild of George and Martha Washington. She married Thomas Law (1759-1834) in 1796; they legally separated in 1804. Law financially supported her and their daughter, Eliza, and both Laws continued to reside in Washington, D.C. By 1811 DPM refers to her as Mrs. Custis, rather than Mrs. Law.

LEAR, Frances Dandridge ("Fanny") ( 1779 - 1856)
Niece of George Washington, second wife of Tobias Lear (1762-1816) and a friend of DPM's. After her husband's death she continued to reside in Washington, D.C. and remained a widow.

LEE, Elizabeth Collins ("Eliza") (1770- 1858)
Daughter of wealthy Quaker Philadelphia merchant Stephen and Mary Collins and wife of Virginia Federalist Congressman Richard Bland Lee (1761-1826), whom she married in 1794. She was DPM's oldest and closest friend. In 1815 the Lees moved from Virginia to Washington, where she became one of the grand dames of the city, and like DPM converted to the Episcopal church.

LEE, William (1772-1840)
From Massachusetts, and a close friend of Joel Barlow, Lee served as U.S. Commercial Agent at Bordeaux from 1801-1816. The Lees had been neighbors of the Madisons when the Madison's lived in the "Seven Houses." He sent French finery back to DPM in Washington. DPM also corresponded with Lee's wife, Susan Palfrey Lee (1767-1822).
