O'BRYAN, Jane
Wife of John O'Bryan, who in 1811 was being held in debtors' prison. JO writes DPM a letter requesting her help in January of 1811.

PAGE, Margaret Lowther (- 1833)
Second wife of John Page (1734-1808), Virginia politician and governor.

PICHON, A. Emilie
Wife of the French charge' d'affaires and commissary general accredited to the United States, 1800-1805. Before that Pichon had served as secretary to the French legation in Philadelphia. He was recalled for indiscreet remarks and the Pichons retired from public life. DPM and AEP remained in touch.

PARKE, Thomas (1749-1835)
Philadelphia Quaker and medical doctor, a director of the Library Company, member of American Philosophical Society, and president of the college of Physicians in Philadelphia. Married Rachel Pemberton. A gay and social man with a talent for friendship.

PAULDING, James Kirke (1778-1860)
From New York State, son of William Paulding and Catherine Ogden. A prominent political and literary figure from 1807 until 1850, and a naval officer, JM appointed JKP Secretary to the Board of Navy Commissioners, and he lived in DC from 1815 to 1823. He wrote an early sketch of the life of JM.

PAYNE, Anna C. (1819-1852)
Niece of DPM, daughter of John C. Payne and Clara Wilcox, she was companion to DPM after JM died. Married Dr. Thomas H. Causten in 1850.

PAYNE, John ( - 1792)
Father of DPM, son of Josias Payne and Anne Flemming; a Quaker and Virginian, he married Mary Coles in 1761. Planter, Quaker and starch merchant, he manumitted his slaves in 1783 and moved his family to Philadelphia.

PAYNE, John C. (1782- )
Brother of DPM, son of Mary Coles Payne and John Payne, he married Clara Wilcox in 1814. After a youth spent in drinking and gambling he settled at Montpelier until he moved to Kentucky.

PAYNE, Mary Coles (1745-1807)
Mother of DPM, daughter of Williams Coles and Lucy Winston she married John Payne in 1761. She grew up in Hanover County, Virginia, on the "Coles Hill" plantation.

PRESTON, William Campbell (1794-1860)
Son of Francis Smith Preston and Sarah Buchanan Campbell, born in Philadelphia. U.S. Senator and College President, lived in Virginia until he moved to South Carolina after his marriage to Maria Coulter in 1822. Had known DPM since childhood and remained close.
