MADISON, James (1751-1836)
Political thinker, politician and planter. Husband of Dolley Payne Todd Madison. Secretary of State (1801-1809), President of the United States (1809-1817).

MADISON, Nelly Conway
Niece of James Madison. Sole surviving child of JM's brother Ambrose Madison and Mary Willis Lee. Married Dr. John Willis (1774-1812) and after 1805 lived in Orange County, Virginia.

MAURY, Ann (1803-1876)
Daughter of James Maury (1746-1840), a merchant and the U.S. consul at Liverpool from 1790 to 1830. James Maury marketed JM's tobacco crops in England. Ann Maury never married. She was a friend of DPM.

MCKEAN, Thomas (1734-1817)
Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, moved to Delaware and in 1773 to Philadelphia. Statesman and jurist he was married twice, in 1763 to Mary Borden, in 1774 to Sarah Armitage. Signed the Declaration of Independence, served in first and second Continental Congresses, from 1777 to 1799 Chief Justice of Pennsylvania and Republican Governor from 1799 to 1808. Father of Sally McKean Yrujo.

MONCURE, Henry Wood (1800-1866)
Son of William Moncure and Elizabeth Henry, he graduated from William and Mary in 1822 and became a merchant with the firm of Dunlop, Moncure and Co. in Richmond. He bought Montpelier from DPM in successive stages in the 1840s and thereafter spent summers there.

MORRIS, Ann Cary Randolph ("Nancy") (1774-1837)
Wife of Gouverneur (1752-1816), daughter of Thomas Mann Randolph, Sr., sister of Thomas Mann Randolph, "Molly", and Harriet Randolph Hackley, NRM had been accused of adultery and infanticide in 1792 and in 1814 John Randolph of Roanoke publicly revived and expanded the charges. NRM and JR remained locked in a personal feud until JR's death in 1833.

MORRIS, Anthony (1766-1860)
A Philadelphia Quaker merchant, son of Samuel Morris and Rebecca Wistar, husband of Mary Pemberton with whom he had four children (including Phoebe Morris), Morris was a very old friend of DPM. He was Speaker of the Pennsylvania Senate (1793-4) and Director of the Bank of North America (1800-1806). After George Erving was forced to leave Spain, Morris became one of America's unofficial (??) representatives there until 1814.
