HACKLEY, Harriet Randolph
A Randolph of Tuckahoe and thus sister of both Thomas Mann Randolph and Ann Cary Randolph, HRH inhabited the same Virginia social world as DPM. She was the wife of Richard S. Hackley, American consul San Lucar and vice consul to Cadiz, Spain and after 1822 surveyor of the port of St. Augustine, FL. HRH turned to DPM as both friend and protector.

HUGHES, Christopher (1786-1849)
A diplomat from Baltimore, MD, in 1811 he married Laura Sophia Smith, daughter of General Samuel Smith. JM sent him abroad as Secretary to the American Peace Commission at Ghent in 1814, and he remained abroad in London, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Norway for the next thirty years. He was known for his good humor and wit.

HYDE de NEUVILLE, Anne-Marguerite-Henriette Rouille de Marigny (1749?-1849)
Wife of Jean Guillaume Hyde de Neuville and a painter, as royalists the couple lived in exile in the United States from 1807 to 1814 and as Minister from France again from 1816 to 1822.

INGERSOLL, Charles Jared (1782-1862)
Philadelphia born son of Jared Ingersoll, CJI was a strong supporter of JM and a member of Congress, 1813-1815 after which he became U.S. District Attorney for Pennsylvania until 1829.
