Deed to John Payne Todd
16 June 1844

Know all men by these presents that I Dolley P. Madison late resident of the County of Orange and State of Virginia and now residing in the City of Washington District of Columbia, for value received, have bargained, sold and granted, and confirmed, and by these presents do grant bargain and sell and confirm unto John P. Todd a certain number of negro Slaves named Tydal of 65 yrs of age, Willoughby about 60 yrs do, John abt 40 yrs, Jerry abt 32 yrs. Matthew abt 45 yrs, Winny abt 45 yrs. Milly abt 40 yrs Sarah abt 50 yrs Caty and young children about 22 Charlotte abt 20 Raif Junr about 33 yrs, Joshua abt 22, Nicholas 36 yrs, Nicholas Junr abt 13 yrs, Gabriel abt 50 yrs and Charles abt 30 yrs with Sylvia and four children she abt 33 yrs old.

To have and to hold the said negroes in the above Schedule and their future increase, to the only proper use and behoof of the said John P. Todd his executors, administrators, and assigns forever. And, I the said Dolley P. Madison for myself, my Executors, and Administrators, the said schedule of Negroes, and their future increase, to the Said John P. Todd, his Executors, administrators and assigns, against me, the Said Dolley P. Madison, my Executors, administrators and assigns, and against all and every other person and persons whatever, shall and will warrant, and forever defend, by these presents. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and affixed my seal this sixteenth day of June in the year one thousand Eight hundred and forty four.
