9th. Apl. 23.

I am impatient to hear from you at Phila. My dearest Payne, had I known where to direct should have written to you before this--not that I had any thing new to communicate, but for the pleasure of repeating how much I love you, & how much I wish to see you, & to hear of your happiness. Your Papa reced. the journal of Las Casas with your name in it, from Phila. which was an indication that you are there, & I write accordingly. We return'd yesterday from Monticello after passing three days with that family & one with Judge Nelsons. Ellen & Virginia were indisposed--all the rest, with Mr. Jefferson quite well. They hoped to have seen you with us. I enclose a letter your Papa reced. from Genl. Taylor, as perhaps you might draw on him without knowing his payment was intended to be made you so soon. Let me know when you propose to leave Pha. & your route that I may send you some commissions. Adieu my dr Son. Your Papa joins me in affectinate wishes for you.

Your Mother
