Montpelier

Montpelier, the Madison planation in Orange County, VA., looking as it did when James and Dolley lived there after he had retired in 1817. Chapman was a landscape, historical, and portrait painter as well as a wood engraver, etcher, and illustrator. Prud'homme made this copy for the title page of James B. Longacre's and James Herring's The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans which was published in 1836.
