Black Land Tenure, 1900

Black farmers met with shocking prosperity in many areas of the postwar South. Land ownership rates in the Valley of Virginia and along the Gulf Coast frequently topped 80%. In the cotton belt, black farmers were much less likely to emerge from the postwar years as land owners.
