Biography: Henry Carter
Virginia native Henry Carter was, prior to the war, one of Adams Lushbaugh’s numerous slaves. Lushbaugh, a Staunton resident, was a carpenter who Carter remembered as being “bitterly opposed to the War.” Despite positive words from one of his former slaves, when Lushbaugh attempted to gain compensation for his lost property, claims commission officials were not convinced of his allegiance to the Union cause.
After the war, Lushbaugh offered his former slave continued employment, promising him good wages. In 1870, Carter was living with his wife, Sarah Frances and their three sons – Shadrach, Samuel, and Robert. |
