Interview with Senator Ted Dalton
|
|
Senator Ted Dalton, Radford, reacted to Governor Thomas B. Stanley's speech at the 1956
Special Session of the General Assembly, calling for massive resistance and the closing
of integrated schools. Dalton claimed he was "anxious" as anyone to retain segregated
schools. Dalton called the plan "illegal and unworkable" and saw it as a hypocritical
reversal of Virginia Democrats' long opposition to the "Powell amendment" and other
federal bills designed to tie federal funding to progress on integration. Dalton argued
that the children in Virginia would bear the brunt of the massive resistance policies.
