My darling Mother,

Today is the first real time have I had to write you. I suppose you have my card by now, but anyway I arrived all safe and sound at ?6:30? and when I came on the campus I found out that I had been moved back to Pierce Hall so I had to go right to work to move my things.

I did not have any time with Capt. Brown about my returning, but one boy in my class stayed six days over time and he had a very poor excuse so they

(page 2)

sent him back.

There are lots of boys and girls here now, (new students) did not look like the same Hampton when I left fifteen days ago. Some of the old students are back already.

When I went back to get my instrument in the band Mr. ?Tesserman? said that I was going to play cornet this year. I am really glad as thats all I have been working for.

We are going, and have got to pay $35.60 on Tuesday as follows: Board $18 for October, $5.00 Incidental fee, $5.00 atheletic fee, and $1.00 music fee, and

(page 3)

about $6.60 for board from 20th Sept. to 1st of October. My bonus just amount to $37.50 so I am safe temperary at least.

I am in my room all alone until Tuesday when Hanks and Alexander arrive. I met a girl in my class in Richmond. She was coming from Baltimore to Williamsburg, her home.

How many concerts did you all get? Did Clarence Feggins become concerted?

I hope you had a nice trip to Oak Grove, and also May to Sand Road.

Give my love to all inquiring friends.

(page 4)

How is Bennie? Give my love to him, and also May if this letter reaches you before she leaves for V.N. and I.I. Has Herbert gone back? Now Mother please don't work so hard and be sure to take Nuxated Iron.

Well I guess Ill have to take my examination in Geometry but I dont know how well prepared I am.

I have just finished eating some of cake you put in my lunch box.

Now Mother I must close

from your loving son
Roger.

How is Miss Hennretta?
