Speech of Hon. John L. Dawson of Pennsylvania on the State of the Union
(Column 1)

Summary: A former member of the Pennsylvania state legislature provides a history of the sectional conflict and condemns the Lincoln administration's subsequent execution of the war.

Excerpt: "They [the Lincoln administration] were not satisfied with passing a bill offering protection and freedom to the slaves of rebel masters who should come within our lines, not satisfied with directing the physical power of the country to the suppression of armed resistance to the authority of the Government, but they proceeded to carry the war directly against the property, the homes, the firesides of peaceful non-combatant residents of seceded States. This was in violation not only of the Federal Constitution, but of every principle of public law."

Full Text of Article:

The demand for new houses has never been greater in our town than the present. Families from abroad, not a few, have in vain searched for houses to rent. We must have more houses built, and we are therefore glad to hear that a number of building lots on Second street and on Catharine street (to be extended through Dr. Schneck's beautiful lots,) are now in the market. The owner of these lots has a draught prepared of the plot of ground, and has fixed a reasonable price on each lot, with easy terms of payment. Now is the time to select the choice sites. There can be no doubt, that in a short time we shall see half a score of fine houses erected in that eligible part of town.
