Indian Hunting in California
(Column 6)

Summary: Sarcastic account of "Indian Hunters" who murder Indians in the West; argues these murderers should be hanged for their crimes.

Excerpt: "Indian hunting is no doubt rare sport, but if the whole story of these campaigns were told, we suspect that Henley and Jarboe, in the judgment of people who are not fond of sports that make humanity blush and decency shrink back in disgust from the haunts of civilized men, would be deemed murderers. For such multiplied outrages, to hang them would be to profane the gallows, which is retained for crimes that swarm not in such gangs."

Judicial Election

Summary: Author resolves to defend David Fultz against the assaults on his character led by other writers of letters, whom he calls "malignant" and "ignorant." Verbally assaults "Z" and claims he is neither knowledgeable nor honest enough to be a lawyer, but rather he writes like a "scrub politician."

The Charleston Convention
(Column 1)

Summary: Editorial on the upcoming Democratic convention, at which the Spectator predicts Douglas will be nominated. The editors also think that the Northern and Southern Democrats will again be reconciled around a platform each interprets to its own satisfaction, despite the South's professed hatred for Douglas.

Staunton Lyceum

Summary: Spectator supports the efforts of a correspondent who wishes to create a permanent Staunton Lyceum, and urges citizens to attend a meeting toward that end to be held in the County Court Clerk's Office.

Baltimore Conference and Slavery

Summary: Report of memorials presented at a session of the Baltimore Conference of the M.E. Church by some Virginia circuits, who lament the divisions within the Church caused by the slavery question.
