(Column 1)Summary: Stephen Douglas' positions threaten to cause disruption within the Democratic party. A "Douglas War" is likewise raging in Virginia as citizens disagree over the best reaction to events in Kansas.

(Column 1)Summary: Reasserts importance of an inquiry into rising counrty expenses. At the 6/1857 court meeting, a committee of justices was appointed to examine the accounts. Although all local officials are above suspicion, an investigation is nonetheless necessary.
