Excerpt: On Friday night last, about 11 o'clock, the Chief of Police and his aids, surprised Jim, a slave belonging to Mrs. Wilson, Charles, a slave in the employ of Mayor Trout, Aaron Shovler, a free negro, and "Cass," a free negro in the employ of the Central Railroad, engaged in a fashionable game of cards, at the residence of Jim's wife. When the officers made a descent upon them, Charles and Shovler attempted to escape through a back window, and accirding to the testimony of Mr. Fifer, the latter inflicted a blow upon him in the scuffle, whether purposefully or not he could not say. All four were arrested, however, and after spending the night in jail, had a hearing on Saturday morning before Alderman Sterrett, who pronounced sentence of five lashes each upon the slaves and twenty lashes each upon the free negroes. Shovler was also bound over to answer an indictment for assault upon Mr. Fifer.
