Denouncing the appearance of street performing magicians in Chambersburg as a sign of the town's moral decay, the author of the letter castigates parents who permit their children to attend such shows.

Relates that the Chambersburg Building Association was organized and its officers elected at the Nov. 20th meeting.

Health

Franklin Repository, July 19, 1865, p. 2, c. 6: "Does It Pay?"
Armed with recent figures to substantiate his claims, "Justice" argues that intemperance costs the county not only in social terms but in economic terms as well. According to his logic, last year Franklin county taxpayers spent $7,826 to remedy the problems caused by hard drink.

Valley Spirit, December 20, 1865, p. 2, c. 5: "Temperance Meeting."
Recounts the proceedings at the Dec. 7th temperance meeting in Mercersburg, which was held to discuss "the great and growing evils of intemperance and its concomitant vices" that are affecting the community. The group passed several resolutions before it adjourned.

Valley Spirit, May 15, 1867, p. 1, c. 1: "The Slaughter of the Unborn."
Noting that the number of abortions has increased in recent years to the point that "it may be said to be common," the editors label the women who undergo the operation as "selfless and cowardly" and castigates the doctors who perform the procedure.

Crime

Valley Spirit, November 8, 1865, p. 3, c. 2: "Local and Personal--A Swindle."
Relates that a swindler by the name of Patterson is collecting money in Lancaster county under the pretense that the donations are to be used to aid the poor in Franklin county. A $50 reward is offered for Mr. Patterson's arrest.

Valley Spirit, January 17, 1866, p. 3, c. 1: "Local and Personal--A New Swindling Dodge."
Reports on the appearance of a swindler in Chambersburg; the man arrived in town on Saturday Jan. 13th and proceeded to victimize "quite a number of verdant people."

Valley Spirit, January 31, 1866, p. 3, c. 1: "Local and Personal--Grand Swindle."
The article warns readers that "a set of unprincipled scoundrels," posing as Bounty and Pension agents, are currently running a scam in several parts of the country, including Pennsylvania.
