Williamsburg, January 31, 1777.

THIRTY DOLLARS REWARD. RUN away from Hunter's Iron Works, the falls of Rappahanock River, the 12th of August last, a Mulatto Fellow named JAMES, about 5 Feet 8 or 9 Inches high, a straight made Fellow, has rather a thin visage, has the marks of the Whip on his Back, which he got several Years before I had him; he is about 26 Years of age, was some Time on Board the Scorpion Privateer, and passed for a free Man, by the name of John James. He left said Vessel in Rappahannock River the 12th Instant. Whoever secures the said Slave in any Gaol shall receive the above Reward, paid at the Gaol before the Slave is taken away, or on delivering him to me on the said River, near Cason's Ferry, King George County. Forty very likely Virginia Born young Slaves will be sold at Fredericksburg the 2d Day of April, for Cash, by JOHN THORNTON.
