Early Albemarle

The Virginia piedmont attracted a unique blend of settlers. In 1744, the year the Albemarle County was officially founded, very few people lived any further west over the Blue Ridge Mountains; only 150 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, it was the frontier. The County's relative isolation fostered a sense of community among the first Anglo settlers.
