Smith Map of Virginia, 1608

This map of Virginia, made in 1608 by John Smith, is one of the earliest known maps of the area. Oriented with north towards the right of the map, much of Virginia west of the fall line through Richmond was drawn based entirely on reports of Powhatan Indians, rather than travels of Smith himself. The inset shows the area designated by Smith as that of the Monacan Indians, including the town of Monasukapanough, which is believed to be located in present-day Albemarle County, VA.
