The land included in this site dates back to a 1730 grant of 17,932 acres from George II to Colonel Nicholas Meriwether. The title comes from "belle voir" meaning beautiful to see. It was here that Meriwether's eldest daughter Jane constructed the earliest home on this site with her new husband, Colonel Robert Lewis of New Kent County. After the death of Col. Lewis this land passed to his son Nicholas who had married the daughter of Dr. Thomas Walker. Dr. Walker served as the executor of Peter Jefferson's estate and as the guardian of Peter's son, Thomas Jefferson. Back to Interactive Map |
