The Geography of Slavery

Norfolk Herald (Willett and O'Connor),
Norfolk, August 8, 1799.

Twenty five Dollars Reward. RAN AWAY from the subscriber the 22d day of July last, a young likely dark or brown mulatto Man slave, 24 years old, named MATT , About 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, wears his hair tied behind with a tail, which passes at the back or sides of his head; his left hand is crippled on the back of it is a very large scar, and his fingers so contracted that he cannot straiten them out nor shut them up close. His thumb is also crippled by the same accident. He has been severely whipped at various times, which his back and shoulders will prove by the scars on them. He is a very forward and impudent slave, has been bred a travelling servant and waiter, understands managing and cleaning horses, boots, shoes, &c. perhaps equal to any servant in Virginia. He will no doubt get a pass, and endeavour to go about as a free man, and get on board some vessel that may be bound to the northward of Eastern States. He has a sister living with Mess. John Cowper & Co. and it is very likely he may lurk about there until he can meet with some opportunity to convey himself away. I will give the above Reward for securing him in jail so that I get him again if taken out of this state, or one half the sum if taken within this state, with all reasonable charges for securing him in jail, or for delivering him to me--All masters of vessels and others are forewarned employing him or carrying him out of the country. JOSIAH RIDDICK. Nansemond, Aug. 8, 1799.
