The Geography of Slavery

Norfolk Herald (Willett and O'Connor),
Norfolk, August 3, 1799.

20 Dollars Reward. RAN AWAY from Windsor Mills, near Petersburg, on Tuesday the 25th inst. a mulatto fellow named JOHN SCOTT , by profession a Waterman and as such is generally known in Norfolk, where I am now of opinion he is now gone. The most particular description that can be given of his person is, that he is about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, well made in proportion, about 25 years old, has lost an eye, which I think is the right one, and has a very bushy head of hair. The dress that he carried with him was a green cloth coat with a white velvet cape, a blue cloth jacket, and a pair of green velvet trowsers but as these are his best clothes, he may probably not wear them in common. The above reward will be given for apprehending said slave, and lodging him in any jail so that I get him again; if taken up in Norfolk or the same distance from Petersburg, and more in proportion to if taken up at a greater distance. Masters of vessels and all others are hereby forewarned at their peril from harbouring, concealing, or carrying off said slave, as the utmost rigor of the law will be exerted against those who do. Richard Bate. Windsor Mills, Aug. 1.
