The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Herald and Fredericksburg Advertiser (Green),
Fredericksburg, July 18, 1793

TAKEN and committed to the jail of this town, on the 29th instant, a Mulatto fellow who calls himself WILLIAM PRICE, about 5 feet 8 inches high, stout built, has on an osnaburg shirt and trowsers, a black hat pretty much wore; is a pert spoken fellow, has woolly hair, and on the back of his head a remarkable scar occasioned by a scald or burn, also one on his left arm done at the same time; between his upper lip and nose a scar done, he says, by a sall; marked on the back by the whip, and has lost two upper fore teeth; says he is acquainted with the blacksmiths trade, and used to go by water. His owner is required to prove his property, pay charges, and take him away. JAMES ALLAN c.o. July, 21st, 1793.
