The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Herald and Fredericksburg Advertiser (Green),
Fredericksburg, July 4, 1793

RANAWAY from the subscriber, on the 22d ultimo, on the road betwixt Fredericksburg and Gaitwood's, as he was going up in a waggon into the county of Orange, MULATTO PETER;--about 16 years of age. The said slave had on when he went away, a short drab cloth coat, with white metal buttons, and a waistcoat of white negro cotton, and brown linen overalls or nankeen breeches.--He was sold at vendue in this town, about 15 months ago, from the estate of Lewis Smith, deceased, in the county of Westmoreland; was bred by Wm. Washington, in the Irish neck, near Leed's Town, and is supposed to be lurking somewhere in the upper part of Westmoreland county, or the lower part of King-George county,--I will give Two Dollars reward, over and above what the law allows, to any person who may deliver the said slave to me in this town, or secure him in any gaol so that I get him again.--Masters of vessels are hereby forewarned from employing or taking the said slave on board. MARK HORNSEY. Fredericksburg, 2d July, 1793.
