The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Herald and Fredericksburg Advertiser (Green),
Fredericksburg, June 13, 1793

RAN AWAY from the subscriber, living in Spotsylvania county, near the court house, on Wednesday the 5th instant, a negro fellow named TITUS; about 40 years of age, stout made, about six feet high, stoops much in walking, has very large feet and large knots on his ankles which occasions him to limp; has a large face, full eye, thick nose, very broad nostrils, coarse beard, and has lost several of his fore teeth; his back retains the mark of the whip. Carried away with him a Virginia cloth and a green plains coat, green and blue breeches, overalls of striped Virginia cloth, and other cloathing.--He is uncommon sensible and artful for a negro, fond of preaching and exhorting, being, as he says, of the Baptist persuasion, and will endeavour to pass for a free man.--I give a reward of Five Dollars to any person who will deliver the said negro to me, if taken in this county; and if taken out of the county, and secured in gaol so that I get him again, Ten Dollars. THOMAS MAGEE. June 12, 1793.
