The Geography of Slavery

Fredericksburg, June 6, 1793

Ranaway from hence on the night of Thursday the 9th instant, May, a Negro lad-named SAMBO, late the property of Col. John Smith, of Richmond county, in whose neighbourhood he is now supposed to be lurking:--He is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, black complexion, slender made, his eyes rather large, and generally looks sullen.--A reward of Six DOLLARS, and reasonable charges, will be paid for bringing him home, or securing him in any gaol so that I get him again.--All masters of vessels, and others, are hereby forbid to harbour him at their peril.
