The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette and General Advertiser (Davis),
Richmond, December 19, 1792.

TAKEN UP and committed to Northumberland county gaol, on the sixth day of September last past, a NEGRO MAN about five feet high, four of five and twenty years old, a dark complexion, and very much scar'd on his back, who says his name is BASIL, and formerly belonged to Philip Marshall in Charles county, and late of state of Maryland, and was sold by said Marshal on board of a Spanish ship, from which place he made his elopement. The owner thereof is desired to prove property, pay charges, and take him away. WILLIAM WEBB, Gaoler. Northumberland Court-house, Nov. 21st, 1792.
