The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette and Weekly Advertiser (Nicolson),
Richmond, February 15, 1787.

HAMPTON, February 6, 1787. THERE are now in the jail of this county, two runaway negroes, viz. GEORGE and MARK. George says he belongs to Levin Ryley, in Maryland, near Snowhill, he is about 16 or 17 years old, of a yellowish complexion, about 5 1/2 feet high. Mark says he belongs to Joseph Newby, in North Carolina, his fore and middle finger on his left hand, grow part of the way together, and says it was occasioned by a burn when he was small, he also has a scar under his left eye, occasioned by a framing gouge. The owners of the above negroes are desired to prove their property, pay charges, and take them away. GEORGE WRAY, S.
