The Geography of Slavery

Richmond, October 11, 1786.

TEN POUNDS REWARD. RUN AWAY from the Subscriber, living in Rockingham County, on the 14th of August last, a Mulatto man named TOM, 29 years old, 5 feet 8 inches high, has an uncommon lameness, or roving in his walk, and a natural mark on the back of his neck, is a shop joiner by trade. Took with him a small shot gun, a black leather shot bag, with ammunition; a beaver hat, green coat, red calimanco jacket, old leather breeches, coarse and fine shirts, thin leather shoes, thread stockings, with other wearing cloaths. Went away in company with him, a white man, who called himself ELIJAH GARDNER . . . Any person apprehending the said GARDNER, so that he is brought to justice, shall have FIVE POUNDS Reward, and for securing the said Mulatto, so that I get him, shall have FIVE POUNDS, and if brought home, all reasonable expences paid by JOHN CRAIG.
