The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette or American Advertiser (Hayes),
Richmond, May 31, 1786.

EIGHT DOLLARS REWARD. RAN away from the subscriber, the 20th of April last, a Negro man named CHARLES, about 5 feet 6 inches high, a well set fellow, appears to be about 28 years of age, by trade a cooper, and is a tolerable carpenter, at which trade he worked near Richmond in January and February last, with a Negro fellow called SAMY, belonging to this place: and it is supposed he is lurking in or about Richmond at this time. Had on, and took with him when he went away, a red jackcoat turned up with blue, white cotton breeches, osnabrug shirt, yarn hose, good shoes and buckles, a brown cloth coat, and other clothes in a knapsack. He has a knot on the inside of his ancle, by which he may be easily discovered. Whoever secures said fellow in prison, so that I get him again, shall have the above reward; and if brought home, all reasonable expences paid. ROBERT JOHNSTON. Port-Royal, May 20, 1786.
