The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette or American Advertiser (Hayes),
Richmond, December 31, 1785.

TEN DOLLARS REWARD. RUN AWAY from the subscriber, living in Henry County, on the 27th day of last October, a likely Virginia born negro Fellow named Solomon, about 30 years old, 5 feet 7 inches high; he is well built, very black, speaks plain and bold, he has a very large mouth and a scar on his left arm, occasioned by a burn when young. He took off with him a blue yarn coat and jacket, filled upon white cotton, double wove, a new cotton coat striped with blue, and copperas cotton, a pair of check overalls, checked with green yarn, a pair of leather breeches, patched between the legs, two pair of white yarn stockings, a country made wool hat, and a large new waggon cloth, made of hemp linen, which I expect he will cut up to make shirts; he also took with him, an old blue rugg and some shoemakers tools. I expect that he will pretend to be a Shoemaker, and pass for a free man. Whoever shall apprehend the said fellow so that I get him again, shall be paid the above reward, and if brought home, all reasonable expences paid, by PETER SAUNDERS.
