The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette or American Advertiser (Hayes),
Richmond, December 17, 1785.

Five Pounds Reward. RUN away from the Subscriber, the 21st day of September last, a negro man named TOBY, supposed to be 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, about 35 years of age, somewhat bow-legged, of a strong make, has had the small pox, and is very much marked by it. He wore away a cotton jacket, dyed of a purple colour, (with maple bark) an oznabrug shirt, a pair of hempen roll trousers or overalls, and a new felt hat, bound with black ferret.--Whoever delivers him to me in Mecklenburg County, near Fox's ferry, or secure him so that I get him again shall receive the above reward. WILLIAM DAVIS. Mecklenburg, Nov. 3, 1785.
