The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette or American Advertiser (Hayes),
Richmond, December 3, 1785.

RUN AWAY from the subscriber, about the last of April, a negro fellow named OBY, he is short and well made, between 25 and 30 years of age, his cloathing of home made white cloth, the cape of his coat lined with blue, a blue jacket turned up with red, a striped cotton jacket, a new felt hat and buckskin breeches, (he was purchased of a man who called himself George Goodrich, of Lancaster County) he took with him a valuable bay HORSE, 14 hands and 3 inches high, branded on the off shoulder H. one hind foot white, and some white hairs in his forehead. Whoever will deliver the said fellow to the subscriber living in the Calf Pasture in Augusta County, shall receive FIFTEEN DOLLARS, and reasonable charges, and FIVE DOLLARS for the Horse.
