The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette or American Advertiser (Hayes),
Richmond, December 3, 1785.

TEN DOLLARS REWARD, WILL be given to any person who will deliver to the subscriber in King William County, St. David's parish, a likely young mulatto fellow by the name of STEPHEN, who ran away the 3d inst. and probably is lurking in the neighbourhood of Mrs. Taliaferro of Caroline, of whom he was lately purchased where he says he has a wife; he had on when he went away (though he may have changed both his dress and name) an osnaburg shirt, a coarse blue broadcloth coat, with plate buttons and lappels, a jacket of the same cloth, with a pair of old corduroy breeches, and coarse white yarn stockings; he is about 18 or 20 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, of a very light complexion, with a bushy head of hair, without any beard, and has a very bad scar on the shin bone of one of his legs; he will without doubt expect to pass as a free man, and may perhaps, if he should not stay in the neighbourhood of Mrs. Taliaferro, bend his course northwardly, where he was purchased by the late Col. Taliaferro.----The above reward will be given to any person who will deliver the said fellow, or secure him in any jail, and give such notice, that he may be procured again by JOHN CATLETT. Nov. 24, 1785.
