The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette or American Advertiser (Hayes),
Richmond, June 25, 1785.

RAN away from the subscriber, on the 3d day of November last, a likely country born negro man named TOM, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, 24 years of age, middling black, a well set, strong made fellow, very artful and cunning. It is supposed that he has a pass that was given to a certain James Scott, a free negro, by General Morgan, with which it is expected he will endeavor to pass for a free man. Any person apprehending the said Runaway and securing him so that I get him again, or for delivering his head, as he is out-lawed, shall have FIVE POUNDS reward, from me in Halifax County (Virginia) near the Court-house. JAMES HARDWICK. June 15, 1785.
