The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette and Weekly Advertiser (Nicolson),
Richmond, June 25, 1785.

Five Pounds Reward. RUN away from the subscriber in Halifax county (Virginia) on the 3d day of November last, a likely active country born negro man, named TOM, 24 years old, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, middling black, very artful and cunning. He is well acquainted with the roads, having been used to drive a waggon. It is supposed that he has a pass, that was given by General Morgan to a certain James Scott, a free negro, and that he will endeavour to pass for a free man under the name of the said Scott. Any person that will apprehend the said slave, and secure him in any jail so that I get him again shall receive the above reward. JAMES HARDWICK.
