The Geography of Slavery

Berkeley County, Nov. 15, 1784. ON Saturday last was committed to this gaol, a Negro Fellow, who calls himself JOHN JACKSON, is slim made, about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, and about 24 years of age: he had on a white cotton coat and breeches, old shoes and stockings. Also, a Mulatto Woman, about the same height as the man, and slim made: She had on a striped jacket with metal buttons, a white hat with a feather in it, and calls herself NELLY EVANS. They pretend to be man and wife, and say they came from York-Town ; that they had a pass when they came from home, signed by Col. Harvey, living at the mouth of Yeocomico, but left it at Shenandoah. Their master or masters, if they have any, are desired to come, pay charges, and take them away. ROBERT COCKBURN, Gaoler.
