The Geography of Slavery

Richmond, December 4, 1784.

EIGHT DOLLARS REWARD. RAN away the 5th inst. from the subscriber, from his plantation in Powhatan County, a mulatto fellow named JOHN GRAY, sometimes calls himself only JACK, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, of an impudent countenance, and sulky disposition, is fond of liquor, and when drunk, very impertinent; is much given to gaming, particularly at cards; had on when he went away, a white shirt ruffled at the bosom; an old, light striped cotton coat, yellowish coloured cloth waistcoat, oznabrug breeches, cotton stockings, new shoes, and an old hat; he had also a small bundle of cloaths with him, that he may change his appearance. It is expected that he will try to get on board some of the vessels in the river, or get employ among the river craft, or the neighbourhood of some of the small towns on the river. CHARLES LOGAN. All masters of vessels are forbid harbouring him at their peril. The above reward shall be paid for securing him in any gaol, that his master may have him again.
