The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette or American Advertiser (Hayes),
Richmond, November 13, 1784.

RAN away from the subscriber, in Albemarle County, on Morman's River, near the Barracks, a Negro man named DAVID, about 30 years of age, a little bald on the top of his head; there is a small piece bit out of one side of his nose. He is about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, well made, can read, and write a little. I expect he has a pass, and will endeavour to pass as a free man. He carried away with him a blanket, and a number of cloaths. He can make chairs, and is a proud trafficking fellow. If any person will secure the said negro so that I get him again, or bring him to me, shall be handsomely rewarded, besides what the law allows. JOHN RODES. Nov. 3, 1784.
