The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette or American Advertiser (Hayes),
Richmond, October 25, 1783.

THIRTY DOLLARS REWARD. RUN away from the subscriber, in Fauquier County, the 6th of January, 1781, a negro man, named JAMES, 5 feet 10 inches high, has a scar on his right hand and middle finger, his back very much cut, stammers when frightened, but speaks very well at other times. I expect that he will endeavour to pass for a free man. I will give the above reward to have him delivered to me, if taken out of the County; if taken up and lodged in any gaol, and information given me, ten dollars; and if taken in the County, five dollars. FRANCIS WATTS.
