The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Dixon & Nicolson),
Richmond, March 24, 1781.

RUN away from the subscribers in Brunswick county, two very likely slaves, viz. GEORGE and TULL. George, about 23 years old, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, a crafty sensible fellow, and once before run away and enlisted during the war under Colonel Buford, and went southwardly as far as Hillsborough, from whence he was brought home, is branded on the back part of both cheeks WB. to hide which, he rubs blacking over it; had on when he went away, a red waistcoat with a dark one over it, leather breeches, and a pair of shoes and stockings. Tull, is a large mulatto fellow, about 27 years old, 6 feet high, well dressed, was seen near Richmond, and said he was going to Fredericksburg to enlist in the service, or join a regiment. All persons by land or water, are desired to take them up, and bring them home, for which they shall have 2000 dollars, and expenses paid, if not brought home, to have them committed to prison, and secured in irons. All officers in the United States are requested if they see such negroes to have them secured. WILLIAM BOSWELL. JOHN WILLIAMS.
