The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Purdie),
Williamsburg, March 8, 1776.

RUN away last Monday morning, a negro fellow named JACK, formerly the property of mr. Joseph Scrivener of this city. He is of a yellowish complexion, a strong lusty fellow, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, about 26 years old, and is a very good carter. He is well clad in new coat, waistcoat, and breeches, of red duffil, and has a new gray fearnought great coat. He is supposed to be lurking in this town, or about the Capitol Landing, where he was bred. Whoever apprehends the said fellow, and delivers him to me, shall have 20 s. reward, if taken near town; but if at any considerable distance, I will give 3 l. ALEX: PURDIE.
