The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Purdie & Dixon),
Williamsburg, March 24, 1768.

RUN away from the subscriber in Chesterfield, near Osborne's, on the 1st of this instant (March) an indentured servant woman named ANNE CARLILE, about 20 years of age, of a dark complexion, has a mark in the upper side of her mouth where she has lost a tooth, and a scar in her forehead; had on an English stuff gown with white silk spots in it, and a check apron. She is supposed to be gone down to Norfolk in a vessel; I therefore forewarn all persons from harbouring her, and all masters of vessels from carrying her out of the colony. She pretends to be a mantua maker. Whoever contrives me word where she is, and I get her again, shall have 20 s. reward. JOHN BRITTAN.
