The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Purdie & Dixon),
Williamsburg, February 11, 1768.

TAPPAHANNOCK, Feb. 1, 1768. RUN away, the 30th of January, an English servant man named JOSEPH GREEN, a labourer, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 10 inches high, a fresh looking man, has curled black hair, is pitted with the smallpox, and his speech is remarkable, and will easily detect him if taken notice of; had on when he went away a white Negro cotton jacket, with a small cape and metal buttons on it, breeches of the same, an osnabrug shirt, plaid stockings, country made shoes tied with leather strings, and an old felt hat cocked. He has been seen to have paper and ink, so may probably have forged a pass. Any person who will take up the said servant, and deliver him to the subscriber, shall have 40 s. reward. ARCHIBALD McCALL.
