The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Rind),
Williamsburg, February 19, 1767.

RAN away from the Subscriber, living in Chesterfield County, on the first of this instant February, a Convict Servant Man named JONATHAN POLLARD who has committed several Robberies lately. He is a stout able bodied Fellow, wears his own light coloured Hair, has a fresh Complexion, is a little pitted with the Small Pox about his Nose, and has probably a Scar on it, having lately fallen into the Fire, and burnt it; he is very quarrelsome when drunk, which is as often as he can get Liquor; when sober, affable and handy; he is a Weaver by Trade, but calls himself a Collier, and pretends to be very knowing in Mines; he has several scars in his head, and has plenty of Cash. He had on a Fustian Coat; but it is likely he will change it, as well as his Name. He was born in the West of England, and speaks in that Country Dialect. Whoever will deliver the said Servant to me shall have FIVE POUNDS Reward, besides what the Law allows, paid by GERARD ELLYSON. N.B. I expect he will endeavour to get on board some Ship: All Masters of Vessels are hereby forbid from employing or carrying him off at their Peril.
