The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Purdie),
Williamsburg, September 1, 1775.

NORTHAMPTON, August 11, 1775. RUN away from the subscriber, on wednesday the 14th of June last, a negro man named Jonathan; he is a low black fellow, with a round face and thick lips, his clothes uncertain, as he may have exchanged them. He is a cunning artful fellow, loves card-playing, but otherwise sober. Whoever takes up said negro, and secures him in any jail, so that I may get him, shall be well rewarded by ANNE TOMPKINS.
