The Geography of Slavery

Virginia Gazette (Purdie & Dixon),
Williamsburg, August 4, 1774.

TAKEN up, by the Subscriber, the 14th of June last, a Negro named SAM, who appears to be about fifty Years of Age, about five Feet five Inches high, speaks bad English, and cannot, or will not, tell his Owner's Name; had on Negro Cotton Jacket and Breeches, also a Jacket made of Virginia Cloth. There being no Jail in this County, I have put him with my Negroes, and shall be glad that his Owner apply for him as soon as possible. ARCHELAUS AUSTIN, Jailer.
